sun over my city
04:27
|
|||
I like to read William Faulkner in French
And think about friends and blunders and stuff
I like to sit and do nothing on a bench
And hang a bit to the closest branch
Watch the Thai Chi training at length
The old ladies and the students
Sun over my city
I feel bullied by its beams
Sun over my city
I feel a heal in this gleam
A man decides to take his chance
But she turns a blind eye to this latest offense
I know where my place is so I just glance
I enjoy the peace and the breeze of romance
I take a quick look over the fence
To check out the wolves in their pens
I open my book but watch the monkeys dance
Rather than read about history of France
…
I head to the planetarium
But hunger and need break my momentum
I buy candy and a piece of gum
That trigger greed in a local bum
To let me know he whistles and hums
He’ll take what I give him he won’t turn it down
But he'll keep it stored in his strange museum
Although it’s not as good as a bottle of rum
…
I ask him my way to go back home
He says: “You know what? All roads lead to Rome”
With this precious advice and all certainties gone
I follow the tracks, and I follow the foam
...
Sand over my city

just to prove me wrong
04:26
|
|||
I can't believe how far you would go
with what insane and silly bravado
throwing away everything there's been between us
for the sake of a little fuss
just to prove me wrong
just to prove that I'm wrong
I'm not sure what you would exactly do,
jump off the Eiffel Tower
or break up a curfew
let the kids dance a crazy foxtrot
perched on the guardrail of a boat
just to prove me wrong
just to prove that I”m wrong
just to prove me wrong
Would you run some mad chemical experiment
Leaving a twenty yard diameter hole in the pavement?
Would you heave a Sisyphean rock
and roll it over and over along the block?
Just to prove me wrong
Just to prove that I”m wrong
Would you call on the highest authorities
on matters of love art science and philosophy
and ask the wise, the clever and the mighty
their surmise about what can possibly wrong with me?
Just to prove me wrong
Just to prove that I”m wrong
Just to prove me wrong
And just when I thought I've greatly improved my songwriting craft
You tell me everything I do is crap
That I chose a ridiculous name
That I'm definitely not cut out for this kind of game
With no attempt to hide the extent of your deprecation
You engage me in an endless conversation
Using debate as a bait for a pointless dispute
That leaves all of our guests completely mute
In order to prove all the folks in the room what kind of boring bloke I am
You make a point not to laugh at the jokes I throw around, they're lost on your deadpan
But you keep on talking to me with a foul mouth
Even if everybody has left the house
And when you're done making fun of my favorite bands
You don't mind letting things really get out of hands
And If I boast : “don't bother, I'm indestructible, I've got an iron coat”
I'll wake up to find you thrusting a knife on my throat
Just to prove me wrong
Just to prove that I”m wrong
Just to prove me wrong

What makes Sophie Sophie
is not her face nor her body
It's not her fearless mind
trapped in the smallest body
It's not her eyes,
cruel eyes,
mischievous eyes
It's not her eyes,
cruel eyes
it's not the lies
that she tells sometimes
What makes Sophie Sophie ?
What makes Sophie Sophie
is no ID, no DNA
it's not some bright ideas
of bright german philosophy
It's not the bugs
she'd never crush,
God's little bugs
It's not the names
she calls us all,
or the scandals
she likes to cause sometimes
What makes Sophie Sophie ?
You say you're stuck
in the same routine
You say you need
Revolution,
but Revolution
rarely begins
at home
So lift up your beak
little penguin
and smile at me
'cos we're a happy menagerie
aren't we ?

a body to share
04:42
|
|||
I saw you there
in the middle of the garden
It doesn't happen that often
but it happened then
I saw you there
with a body to share
It doesn't happen that often
but it happened then
Just like a ghost
with a body to share
A beautiful ghost
with a body to share
with a body to share
I saw you there
with a body to share
It doesn't happen that often
but it happened then
with a body to share
And that I turned down
It doesn't happen that often
but it happened then
Just like a ghost
with a body to share
A beautiful ghost
with a body to share
with a body to share

sweet apocalypse
04:48
|
|||
I hear rumors from the street
the stampede of the feet
running
Women leaving their kids behind
Men being slain trying to hide
crying for mercy but they cry in vain
People praying by a candle
burning their dead on a bundle
weeping
Others setting their heart at peace
getting ready for the Apocalypse
dying like the ancients used to die in Greece
The end of the world is near
People are just too busy to hear
its agony
But me I have time for this
listening to the burning cities' hiss
Whatever the final outrage
the coming of a new ice age
Mankind swept out by some kind of rage
It will be a beautiful picture
like in a motion picture
all that was born from a phrase now gone to the sound of a turning page
Two Thousand Twelve or Sixteen
the Eiffel Tower fell
and so is the Sixtine Chapel
nothing is left but me watching
the end of the world on a screen
a beautiful and terrible scene
'Cause the end of the world is here
People are just too busy to hear
its agony
But me I have time for this
listening to the burning cities' hiss
And whatever may come in
a monstrous creature with a fin,
and a sinister grin
scampering flesh-eating bugs
crawling out from under the rugs...
zombies acting like thugs
a shapeshifting thing from Antarctic
little fellows hidden in the attic
All kinds of freaks and lunatics
a giant slug cutting its groove
a beastly bull stomping its hooves
I'm just not willing to move my feet
What the new world will be like ?
will it be empty and dark
will it be an empty Ark
drifting over the marsh ?
will it be one of anarchy
or one of complete comedy
or one of pure geometry
dots, circles and triangles ?
will it be a fashion nightmare
ran by people with dyed hair
wearing padded-shoulders jackets
that'd have taken over the planet ?
Will it be a new Eden
with men and women created
from former presidents semen
a simian planet of the apes ?
The end of the world is here
People were too busy to hear
its agony
Me I have time for this
listening to the burning cities' hiss

Framed in the window
high and clear
is it you that I saw
just like a hunted deer ?
I pictured you there
I wanted you there,
because sometimes we desire
terrible things
You walked through the cloister
bent down an quilled over
I wanted you to kneel more
to kneel to the floor
I pictured you there
I wanted you there,
because sometimes we desire
terrible things

all over it
03:34
|
|||
So many books
I've read too fast
So much time
I've spent in bed or in class
But now
Oh now
I'm all over it
So many lazy afternoons
in the library
gathering the best I could
from public properties
But now
Oh now
I'm all over it
So many trains I took
in the wrong directions
just to follow a look
or an invitation
But now
Oh now
I'm all over it
But now
Oh now
I'm all over it
So many friends I met
on the platform
to share a last cigarettes
before going back home
But now
Oh now
I'm all over it
So many rugged miles
I walked for the sake of it
losing time in the shopping malls
or in the city streets
But now
Oh now
I'm all over it
So many books
I've read too fast
So much time I've spent in bed
or in class
But now
Oh now
I'm all over it
Now
Oh now
I'm all over it

the answer
04:46
|
|||
When I came to you, late at night
with twenty-five candy boxes and a rose
in the candy, you didn't bite
and in the rose you didn't put your nose,
but I knew right off the bat
that you cared a little because
the answer you gave me was polite
but an answer there was
Seemingly empty,
but I'm sure there's something to see
the beast within you tamed easy
but I'm sure there's something to see
When I climbed up your wall
putting my steps in Romeo's
I never heard you shout “don't fall”
you remained indifferent and perfectly composed
but I knew right off the bat
that you cared a little because
the answer you gave me was polite
but an answer there was
Seemingly empty,
but I'm sure there's something to see
the beast within you tamed easy
but I'm sure there's something to see
And you said : “Not that I care to explain
But words are a lost cause on me”
You paused and said again :
“It would put me in great pain
to see you try this on aimlessly”
a coma and a sigh, and then you add, quote and unquote:
“my love always comes a huge dose,
and if I gave you a shot,
it might even kill you, I suppose”
but I knew right off the bat
that you cared a little because
the answer you gave me was polite
but an answer there was
Seemingly empty,
but I'm sure there's something to see
the beast within you tamed easy
but I'm sure there's something to see

the boy
03:15
|
|||
Sure there’s reasons to worry
But this is none of my business
And if the boy lives in another house with another me
Let it be, let it be blessed
Does he call him Daddy
Just like he used to call me by mistake?
I shouldn’t think of it with envy
After all, what difference does it make?
But could you please let him know eventually
That I loved him more than myself?
I hope he’ll grow happy and free
‘cause you know he was my blood and flesh
Even though we don’t belong to the same tree
And I gave up on him at half race
I guess he’ll have reasons to be angry
fine by me, as long as he remembers my face
There’re millions of other stories
I could have told him, but I saved the saddest
For the time he wouldn’t find them too scary
And understand they’re the best
Now I have time to be lazy
I don’t have to wait by the swings with an air of fake interest
But I miss the sweet pangs in my belly
The first time he gave me his kind embrace
I don’t have to make him pee
To make and remake his shoelace
But I also was the first one to see
him waking up in a funny disgrace
Every time I had this light load to carry
When I was begging for a chance to rest
Every time he was crying for his mummy
His fists banging hard on my chest
Every time I thought I’d be better off happy-go-lucky
I also wished he hadn’t belonged to someone else
it’s not that I miss the responsibility
I just miss the boy

the girl
02:51
|
|||
I liked the girl
I liked her face
I liked the way she was dressed
But I knew all of her ways
and I didn't want to go against her ways
I want a day
a single day
that I can remember
a day to remember
Cause I knew all of the days
and I didn't want to live another day
to live another day...

what am I doing here?
03:40
|
|||
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing down here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
The priest told me
“The answer’s in the sky
You’ll be happy
When you die
You’ll find glee
When your hear the angels fly
That’s all you need
To get by”
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
Lord I do know it’s not to wait in fear
Lord I don’t know what I am doing down here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
The oracle told me
“we’re gonna make a pie
To foresee
Where your future lies”
But the leaves of tea
That she scrutinized
They said only
Tales of petty lies and cries
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
Lord I don't know what I am doing here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing down here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
My girl told me
“You should rest your head a while
on my knees
on my puny thighs
There’s so many
Things to trouble a troubled mind
But you’ll be free
When your hear this lullaby”
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing down here
Lord I don’t know what I am doing here

hold on tight
02:42
|
|||
You brought back plants and ants
in the hem of your pants
from your trip to the country
to the unfriendly seedy beating heart of the city
where you don't want to be
Today we'll have lunch on the scaffolding
bring the Punch
I'l bring the bred and the beans
all we need is a good sense of balance and a good appetite
we gotta hold on tight
you brought back cold and frost
in the folds of your coat
from your trip to the country
to the unfriendly city,
the beating heart of the city
where you don't want to be
There's a book open page 28
I know you'll never skip through it again
back to the cave, back to the ice age
Sure you got nothing against things of the mind
it's just that you don't want give it too much time
back to the cave, back to the ice age
you're done with the thinking
you're done with everything
except for the scaffolding
we gotta hold on tight

Jessamine
04:04
|
|||
She stands in there
defiantly with a smile like a razor blade
Something in the air
strikes up my mind and goes straight to my head
A sunny day
Gives me another reason to stay
But she wishes the thought away
making it rain to keep all hearts at bay
Oh Jessamine raised an eyebrow
When I told her I loved her so
Oh Jessamine
Oh Jessamine
I love you though
I wasn’t there
I wasn’t there by accident
I got to give her a present
That wouldn’t stir up no excitment
Down in her street
I was waiting on the pavement
waiting for her to hear my screed
But she just continued to read
Oh Jessamine raised an eyebrow
When I told her I loved her so
Oh Jessamine
Oh Jessamine
I love you though
An exquisite corpse
gives me another reason to die
Under the torch,
for the first time I saw her cry
Down in the grove
I’ll bring a shovel and my love
Looking above
I know you’re somewhere up in the sky
Oh Jessamine raised an eyebrow
When I told her I loved her so
Oh Jessamine
Oh Jessamine
I love you though

read my lips
06:27
|
|||
You spend an awful lot of time
reading lips
will you ever read mine?
You've put a thousand lines
on peoples's lips
what would you put on mine?
Choose the words
carefully
your hair yanked in a ponytail
make me say
something funny
make me say...
well you can read lips, can you?
So read mine
Read my lips
I saw you standing there in the door frame
I didn't tell the truth
I hoped somehow you could read my mind
It was like waiting soaked wet under the rain
by a phone booth
for a call that will never come
Choose the words
carefully
good-hearted words
sometimes like fire, sometimes like ice
make me say
something funny
make me say...
well I can't read lips, can't I ?
So read mine
Read my lips
I should have told you in the first place
what it was all about
but I hoped somehow you would read my mind
or you pushed you in at a slow pace
and shut the door behind
and put my lips on yours
Choose the words
carefully
choose the words,
make them sound trustworthy
Should have said
something funny
should have said...
Well, you can read lips, can you?
So read mine
Read my lips
